How old can motorcycle tyres be?

In the Netherlands there is no legal age limit for motorcycle tyres; there is one for tread (1 mm). Rubber hardens over the years, even if you ride little. Have a tyre checked every year from about five years old. If it is older than ten years, we advise replacing it, even with enough tread.

How can you see how old your tyre is?

Look at the DOT code on the sidewall. The last four digits give the production week and year: 2423 is week 24 of 2023.

Why does a tyre age even if you ride little?

Rubber dries out from sun, heat and time. An old tyre gets harder and has less grip, especially on cold or wet roads. Small cracks in the sidewall are a sign of age.

When do you replace an old tyre?

  • With cracks in the rubber or sidewall.
  • When the rubber feels hard or the tyre gives less grip.
  • When the tyre is older than about ten years, even with enough tread.
  • With a cut, a bulge or when the tread has worn down to the wear indicators.

What does tyre fitting cost?

Tyre fitting costs €50 per tyre, incl. VAT. The tyre itself is charged separately. Also read when to replace your tyres and see motorcycle tyres.
