Motorcycle stalls when warm: possible causes
Does your motorcycle stall once it is warm? Often the cause is the fuel supply, the carburettor or mixture, a sensor or the ignition. First stop somewhere safe. Don't guess with parts: we find the real cause in our workshop in Waalwijk. Labour costs €75 per hour incl. VAT.

What do you do first?
If your motorcycle stalls while riding, especially in a corner or at a junction, that is dangerous. Don't keep riding it until the cause is known. Message us and we discuss how best to get your motorcycle to us.
What are possible causes?
- Idle speed too low: when warm the revs drop, and if idle is set too low, it stalls.
- Air leak: a cracked or loose intake rubber lets in air that upsets the mixture.
- Carburettor: dirt or a badly adjusted carburettor, especially on older motorcycles.
- Fuel supply: a dirty fuel filter, a weak fuel pump or a blocked tank vent.
- Sensors: a temperature sensor or other sensor giving wrong values when warm.
- Ignition: an ignition coil or pickup that fails when it gets warm.
- Cooling: a cooling fan that doesn't switch on, so the engine gets too hot.
- Charging: a regulator or alternator that doesn't charge the battery properly.
What can you check yourself?
- Is a warning light on? Read warning light.
- Does the cooling fan switch on when the engine gets warm?
- Do you see a cracked intake rubber or a loose hose?
- Does it only happen at idle, or also while riding? That helps us in the search.
Why is guessing expensive?
An engine that cuts out has many possible causes. Replacing parts on a hunch costs money and often doesn't fix it. We find the cause first: we connect the diagnostic tool where possible, measure and test. See diagnostics and fault finding and hesitation.
