Are the papers in order?
- Compare the registration number and frame number with the papers.
- Do a free registration check on the RDW website.
- Ask for invoices and the service book: when was the last service?
What do you check on the motorcycle?
- Tyres: tread, cracks and the DOT code. Read how old motorcycle tyres may be.
- Brakes: pad thickness, smooth discs and a firm lever.
- Chain and sprockets: slack, rust and pointed teeth.
- Leaks: oil under the motorcycle or on the forks.
- Damage: scratches on levers, footrests and fairing often point to a fall.
- Cold start: ask for the motorcycle to be cold when you come to look, and listen whether it runs smoothly.
What do you look for on the test ride?
Pay attention to how it shifts, brakes and rides in a straight line, and whether any lights come on. Only take a test ride if you are insured and the seller agrees.
